Seven Orders, Lots of Applause

Three UBC faculty, two UBC alumni and two UBC honorary degree recipients were appointed to the Order of Canada – one of this country’s highest civilian honours. The faculty were: Nancy Hermiston, university marshal and opera director; Sherrill Grace, professor of English and; James Kimmins, science professor emeritus. The alumni were: medical educator and surgeon Dr. Morton Doran (’73) and conservationist Juri Peepre (’81). The honorary degree holders: historian and author Michael Bliss (’07) and; writer and artist Douglas Coupland (’10). Vancouver philanthropist and significant UBC donor Djavad Mowafaghian was also named to the Order in recognition for his generosity in the support of the education, health and well-being of children as well as Dempsey Bob, Tahltan-Tlingit artist, teacher and cultural preservationist and ambassador.
